[Dance House:] Galantis – Emoji

Swedish duo Galantis, delivers a fun, light-hearted affair with “Emoji.”

[Dance House:] Emoji – Galantis

Swedish EDM duo Galantis’ newest song “Emoji” is a very welcome affair to the EDM world. Beginning with very soft, yet sultry vocals reminiscent of ones oft used by fellow House DJ, Kaskade, the beat picks up into energetic, fun, light-hearted sound. A nice change of pace from the high energy drops so often the go to’s at modern EDM shows and festivals.

Oooohhhh weeee / Send me an emoji, lemme know how you feel croons the female vocalist. Accentuated by light piano chords and a light rhythm, the song certainly makes a perfect “wind-down” number for house DJs.

The music video, directed by Dano Cerny is a cute visualization of a member of the duo spending time alone at his house with an emoji/heart. The ending is really sweet and the video goes well with a fun little tune like this one.

[Dark House/Future House:] Rootkit – Take A Shot

Off the Alchemy Volume III EP, Rootkit’s “Take a Shot” blends heavy industrial sound with Future House.

[Dark House/Future House:] Take a Shot – Rootkit

Fresh from the Confession label’s Alchemy Vol. 3  is a new song from Future House producer Rootkit. Track six on the album, “Take a Shot” combines heavy bass, and a dark atmospheric sound to create a future house track that exudes a full bodied, yet minimalist sound.

As the sampled voice in the background repeatedly commands “Take a Shot,” sounds of echoing synths and tribal sounding wails combine to creating a very industrial feel.

Preview the Alchemy Volume III EP here.

Also check out a previously blogged about remix of fellow label mate Tchami’s “World To Me” where Rootkit also adds a heavy atmospheric sound to the original track.

[Alternative EDM:] Grasscut – Pieces // Underground EDM, indie & rap from [adult swim]

[Alternative EDM:] Grasscut – Pieces

Grasscut’s “Pieces” is a delightfully unique offering in the electronic genre-sphere. Fresh from the Ninja Tune label, this “alternative electronic” track has elements of dance-pop collide with alternative rock/indie music that is reminiscent of bands like Death Cab for Cutie or Velveteen.

Beginning with sultry, subdued warped vocals, the song quickly begins an entrancing xylophone-like synth along bass and a steady beat. The accompanying video uses what looks like tripped out stock footage, in vintage 480p, adding to that underground/indie feel.

Appearing in an [adult swim] bump, the intermissions between their own shows and commercials, the network often promotes underground rap, hip-hop and electronic music. The network and Ninja Tune label are also closely associated with Big Dada records, Brainfeeder (Flying Lotus’ record label), and WARP records.
It is partly thanks to [adult swim], the network designed for 18-34 year olds, that eclectic acts such as Flying Lotus and Tycho and many more underground hip-hop acts (through label Definitive Jux) have been discovered, such as Aesop Rock, Cage, Despot, El-P, Murs, RJ-D2, and more received more widespread recognition.

The Ninja Tune and WARP records labels were radio stations in Square Enix’s Hong-Kong “GTA” video game, “Sleeping Dogs.” Within the game, playing the station would bring up underground EDM and ambient hits like Bonobo’s “Kiara,” artists like Stateless, Coldcut, UK rap/grime act Two Fingers, Emika & Lorn. It’s sister station “WARP records” played jams from artists such as Rustie, Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke. Truly revolutionary for it’s time (Sleeping Dogs was released in 2012).

Progressive DJ Boris Brejcha put on a hell of a set at Tomorrowland 2018 in Belgium. Several standout songs were in his set, which featured exclusively only Brejcha’s own music. The German DJ had fans locked into his realm of entrancing soundscapes for over an hour and a half and received rave reviews for his performance (as well as many others he has done as of late). [Chill House/Future Ambient:] Louis the Child – Better Not (feat. Wafia)

Louis the Child’s “Better Not” offers up futuristic synths alongside tropical, island beats.

[Downtempo Dance House:] Better Not (feat. Wafia) – Louis the Child.

Just in time for the summer is a cut with plenty of cool, tropical vibes. With a repeating reggae tin drum in the backbeat helping to create the dreamy, calm atmosphere of “Better Not” Wafia‘s vocals fit right in.

Louis the Child creates an interesting flow with this one, which initially resembles a contemporary pop song.

Though that may be true, by the first hook the track intrigues as the synths pick up. Then by the first “drop” you’ll find yourself humming and swaying to the beat and echoing the chorus of “You better not…” This is a great song for the season and not to be missed.

[Chill/House:] NVDES – Louì

NVDES are back at it again with a chill house cut 🎧

[Chill House/Ambient/Big Room:] NVDES – Louí

Check out this chill house cut from NVDES. The group has been gaining popularity after their song “D.Y.T. (Do Your Thing)” appeared in an Apple commercial for different styles of camera lighting.

Like “Do Your Thing,” “Louí” has a very chill vibe, even more so than the former. Lush house vibes and a calm, but steady beat are refreshingly reassuring for the house genre as a whole.

[Bass/Future House:] Tchami – World To Me (feat. Luke James) [Cazztek Remix]

Cazztek delivers a bass thumping, yet ethereal big room “feel” take on Tchami’s “World to Me”

Bass/Future House:

Tchami – World to Me (feat. Luke James) [Cazztek Remix]

Tchami’s “World to Me (feat. Luke James)” was one of the songs hot enough off his album to warrant its own EP. I’ve covered the Rootkit Remix & the Dillon Nathaniel Remix but there’s another flip just as epic that deserves not to be overlooked.

Cazztek’s remix of the song takes it in an interesting direction. A fusion of bass house, dance house and Future House this remix blends all these elements for an uplifting, atmospheric remix with plenty of energy.

A catchy beat and vocal sample play over the opening hook, “Baby, you should know/that you mean the world to me” with trance synths into a bass filled future house drop. The drop alone, heavy enough to fill dancefloors, refreshingly devolves back into broken down layers at the second chorus/full hook.

Ending out with warped bass and synths and then the return of the distorted vocal sample results in a song so upbeat, so funky, so different it’ll turn just about any person’s head.
