[Real Hip–Hop] Throwback Article: Smoke Break – Curren$y & Alchemist from their highly lauded “Covert Coup” mixtape.

Some songs are just too good not to repost. The ones that come up on shuffle mode and just so happen to be exactly what you feel like hearing (crazy right, or is it?). Mine for the day was the ever-classic “Smoke Break” by semi-underground ex-Young Money front-runner Curren$y.

After a long day of sorting through new electronic, house and trap (street rap not the overdone EDM genre). Hearing this come on with Spitta’s ever masterful — bars on ‘one hunnit’ swag as usual, combined with the lazy, riding on Cloud 9 type beat with heavy instrumentation, laid down by none other than acclaimed Hip-hop producer Alchemist rounded out a good, long productive day.

EDM Origins’ post today will feature the Swedish electronic producer and DJ, Marcus Schössow and two epic EDM tracks of his, the entrancing “Mr. White” and his epic ambient Nu Progressive remix of John O’Callaghan’s “Take It Away” Both tracks exemplify the core values and foundations of EDM. “Mr. White” and it’s many remixes make successful blends of the original’s use of “female robot” vocals (a la Knife Party), the rhythmic toy or video game synth chords (a la Eric Prydz) and that infectious backbeat present in all today’s club bangers, the 2007 single was way ahead of its time. Two of the better cuts of the song are the “Original mix” and the version of the song that was mixed and included in Trance: The Ultimate Collection 2007.

“Take It Away” is a much more trance-house inspired tune, but just as epic and golden in the world of ambient music. Starting out as expected for a vocal trance tune, the song quickly sheds its cookie-cutter frame as layers of deep house sounds envelop the listener and heavenly, soothing vocals reminiscent of 4 Strings or Tiesto begin. As if this wasn’t good enough already, the song halfway through showcases haunting vocal effects during an a capella, and shortly after drops the unforgettable, addictive melody that caresses the aural senses until the end of the song.

Both tracks are worth checking out, simply for how good they are on their own but also as exemplary cuts embodying the core values of electronic dance music.

The result is a chilled-out futuristic banger with plenty of bass and future sounds to compliment any mix, set or dancefloor.

Monsters With Tiny Mustaches brings us another chill-hit in their re-make/mash-up of Drake featuring Stwo in “Ain’t No Frontiers”; a mash-up of Drake’s “No Tellin” & Stwo’s “Frontiers”.

Adding layers of chill and ambient relaxed sound to the original and some trappy snares to further mellow out, yet also make the track more vibrant and lively. This smooth ambient track should fit right in to any music lover’s library, DJ set for a slower cut to round out the night or as a track for intimate occasions.

Welcome to another EDM Origins post, this time featuring “Neon Sky Rain” one of the standout tracks from independent artist Vector Lovers, an alias for British EDM producer, Martin Wheeler. The song incorporates a very spacey-vibe with futurstic, space-like synths and chords, reminiscent of distant solar systems. The track, released back in 2003, was so far ahead of its time, it isn’t even funny. EDM artists today could take a page from songs and artists like these, who clearly came from a background, foundation and genuine love for electronic music they create. Not like many of these “iMac DJs” or “DJs” who just learned what “Darude – Sandstorm”, or “specialize” in Trap or another fad genre. Super-producer Kaskade’s remix of his own side-project (Late Night Alumni)’s single, “The This This” is an amazing big room remix very reminiscent of Kaskade’s early works from the early 2000s. “The This This” combines elements of big room house and trance to create a mind-meltingly good remix, just as if not more soothing than the original. Fresh off Late Night Alumni’s latest EP, Eclipse the song can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon and BeatPort.

After being a preview for quite some time, a free download has emerged of EDM DJ David Egg‘s Bootleg Remix of Wiz Khalifa’s hit single, “See You Again (featuring Charlie Puth)” Made popular by Fast and Furious 7, this cut dubbed as relax bounce by its remixer, is certainly very relaxed, and…well bouncy. With an incredibly danceable BPM and an interesting mix of house and hip-hop elements this remix certainly has the potential to be a summer anthem.
