[EDM Origins House & Alternative:] Kaskade – Steppin’ Out // Kosheen – Same Ground Again


Kaskade is probably one of the most popular and sought-after American producers of electronic and house music. Chances are, if you watch TV, play video games or went to the movies you’ve heard one of his songs. His music is featured in many different forms of media, much akin to fellow EDM producers and DJs, like BT and Paul Oakenfold.

Our feature is one of Kaskade’s signature songs from the early 2000s, the completely chilled-out, smooth house single “Steppin’ Out”

Kaskade is largely known for growing the house music scene in his hometown of Chicago in the early 2000s. Though Kaskade has varied in musical styles during his growth, as a whole, his music can be said to be fulfilling for the soul, or music to put you at ease. Much of his house music includes sultry female vocals alongside soft, harmonic melodies that become instantly recognizable, simply from their uniqueness. Take the song that introduced many, including myself to Kaskade, his absolutely astonishing remix of David Morales & Tamra Keenan’s “Here I Am” featured in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.

Next up was a random song that my iPod shuffled to today. An EDM/progressive-house tune I bought and downloaded back when I was a senior in high school (2007). This one comes from Alternative Electronic band Kosheen, one of their bigger breakout singles, “Same Ground Again“. In fact, their whole 2007 EP, Damage is chock-full of good alternative-sounding electro music that still holds up today. Check it out above and see more from Kosheen at the links below:

Next up is an amazingly chill re-work of popular rap/trap hit “Bandz A Make Her Dance” originally by Juicy J. For this incredibly chill remix we highlight EDM artists KDS who has turned the trap banger anthem into a relaxed afternoon, bass-heavy future wave single. Chill is an understatement here and the use and variety of samples used is refreshing. Don’t sleep on this! Thumbs up all around here!!

[Throwback Trap/EDM/Freestyle Rap:] TNGHT – Higher Ground (Khadafi Dub Freestyle) // [EDM Origins: Trance] Narcotic Thrust – When the Dawn Breaks (Radio Edit)


Today’s throwback is on West Coast rapper Khadafi Dub and his quite good freestyle over TNGHT’s “Higher Ground.” The original tune featured has been a big hit ever since TNGHT, the collaboration of EDM artists Hudson Mohawke and Lunice dropped it in 2012.

Khadafi Dub may not have the best lyrical skills in the game, but he has worked hard at his craft and worked even harder at finding unique, interesting beats to rap over; many EDM tracks as well as house and dubstep, and he was one of the first rappers to do it. Our second track is another throwback, this one I discovered during my high school days. Released in 2005, “When The Dawn Breaks” by Narcotic Thrust was one of the first progressive house tunes I ever got into. The original and the Cicada remix do not disappoint! Smooth vocals layered over calming house synth sounds compose this little-known trance sleeper gem.

[Trap/Funk/House] NGHTMRE & SLANDER – Gud Vibrations // [EPIC House/Ambient & Smooth Chill Trap] Faded [Remixes]


The very funk inspired “Gud Vibrations” is quite a nice blend of trap and house sounds coming from the collaborative mind of EDM producers, NGHTMRE & Slander.

Next we have two incredible remixes of EDM artist Zhu’s “Faded.” The first comes from the remarkably talented EDM producer Enda who certainly injects a heavenly atmospheric vibe into the original. The result is an instantly chilling, instantly soothing ambient track to chill and vibe out to.

Another rising name in the EDM scene, Lido, also remixed “Faded” with a much more trappy, but still chill feel. This comparably slower version fits more in lounge type scenarios then in a dancehall or club but is still very moving. Check out both remixes and more from their artists above in the links. [Dance / Trance:] Martin Garrix feat. Usher – Don’t Look Down [YT Music Awards] & [Throwback Trance:] Armin Van Buuren feat. Ana Criado – Suddenly Summer (Norin & Rad Remix) [ASOT 556]


Featured in the Youtube Music Awards is dance track “Don’t Look Down” by EDM artist and DJ, Martin Garrix with vocals from R&B sensation Usher. The result is a quite uplifting dance track with an equally interesting, fun and silly music video embracing feeling the music and letting yourself go. Our next throwback and trance tune is one of my favorites from Armin Van Buuren’s trance megamix series, A State of Trance, this track from its 556th edition is an absolutely stunning and excellent remix of “Suddenly Summer” by Armin Van Buuren featuring female vocalist, Ana Criado. The Norin & Rad Remix takes this trance tune to the top with a simply transfixing repeating synth melody that begins around the 4:30 mark. Take a moment to sit back, relax and let this song take you away…

[Throwback] [Trance] Not Ferris – Love is Alive (Original Mix)


Starting out “Love is Alive” sounds like your run of the mill trance or house tune, but stick it out and the song develops into an aural masterpiece. Initially, the seemingly simplistic melody evolves into one the most unique, aurally pleasing songs I have ever heard. Released in 2008 by Not Ferris this floor-filler uplifts the mind and the soul.
