Next up is an amazingly chill re-work of popular rap/trap hit “Bandz A Make Her Dance” originally by Juicy J. For this incredibly chill remix we highlight EDM artists KDS who has turned the trap banger anthem into a relaxed afternoon, bass-heavy future wave single. Chill is an understatement here and the use and variety of samples used is refreshing. Don’t sleep on this! Thumbs up all around here!!

As part of the division of genres into pages that will follow on this music blog, I am highlighting one of our first Alternative Rock song features, this one from the band Saints of Bliss with their track “Born on the Wrong Side”. With plenty of alternative and indie feel behind the song, the track is a nice solid listen with plenty of emotional depth in its borderline angst, but pleasurable lyrics, down-tempo chords mixing with alternative-pop rock riffs.

[Throwback] [Classic Wiz] Wiz Khalifa – Hopes and Dreams


Clearing out favorite bookmarks is about a tedious task as trying to clean up your e-mail (especially when your inbox basically permanently says 1000+ new messages), but sometimes you stumble across gems you forgot you favorited 2 years ago.

Re-stumbling across a review of one of my long-time favorite rappers (at least when we was underground) Wiz Khalifa‘s third studio album, first major-label EP Rolling Papers, which released to mixed reviews in 2011. While technically more than competent, the content and lyrics of the album were a departure from Wiz’s original style he expressed in his earlier mixtapes, like Kush & OJ, the legendary P.O.T.C. tapes or even B.A.R. (Burn After Rolling).

My initial reaction to the Spin review of the album was that the author was over-hyping this musical “fail” and stuck on the ability of a big budget to make a rapper’s album sound polished and “professional.” However, when he had brought up longtime favorites that really weren’t too bad, in fact Wiz had some sleeper hits on there as well, a few I agree with the author such as with “Rooftops” featuring Curren$y, “The Race,” one of the top tracks of the album, or Roll Up (the most mainstream but catchiest single by far. There were a few other songs I give 5 stars in my iTunes here: “Top Floor” with an addictive very-experimental beat, “Hopes and Dreams,” my personal favorite of the album, and “wake Up” all do more than enough justice to Wiz’s earlier works.

The remaining tracks, while not necessarily terrible, were not anything great either. I completely disagree with the SPIN article’s author opinion of “Fly Solo,” that song. was. just. terrible. Which is why today’s highlight will highlight “Hopes and Dreams” from Pittsburgh’s own. “Star of the Show” with fellow Taylor Gang label-mate Chevy Woods is also a standout, with that “chill” vibe Wiz is known for.

Hope everyone is having a great week and a good Tuesday, regardless of whether you were at a club that was going up or not (couldn’t help myself). With the coming of Spring I have had a little bit more time to work on new mixes and original choreography. More people are out and about, and as the end of the semester approaches a well deserved break is around the bend as we transition into summer. In Atlanta, the fair weather already has the city more turnt than usual; I was recently enlisted to DJ at a small gathering downtown which was quite a fun, insightful experience (see video down below or click:).

I’ve got two brand new mixes for you today released just in time for Spring as more of you are looking to turn up, travel or just enjoy good music. The first of my new mixes is an indie house blend, consisting of some eclectic and harder to find songs from the house and overall EDM genre, titled “Deeper Cuts.” Artists featured include: Thunderheist, Röyksopp, LCD Soundsystem, Fedde Le Grande, Nicky Romero featuring Matthew Koma and more…

Give it a listen (intended for long play, it’s about 30 min) or skim through and check it out where I hope you’ll find something you enjoy and can get down to. My second mix I released about a week or two ago on Soundcloud, titled “ride out (2 This ATL)” is a mix of hip-hop and rap songs that you can ride out to. Several prominent rappers are featured, as well as a wide range of hip-hop and rap songs with a few trap tracks thrown in for good measure. Two members of the MIGOS arrested for drug possession in Georgia

Two members of popular ATL rap group the MIGOS were arrested last night for drug possession after performing at a concert in Statesboro, Georgia. The trio held a concert last night (Saturday Apr. 18) at Georgia Southern University when the concert was cut short by police. When the MIGOS were taken in for questioning, members Quavo and Offset had been found to be in felony possession of cocaine, OxyContin and codeine, possession of a firearm on school property and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

MIGOS, the hit group behind “Versace” is preparing to release their debut album YRN: The Album June 16.
